27 Health Facilities in Western Area Targeted for Ebola Response

Freetown, May 30, 014 (SLENA) – The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has acquainted both government and private hospitals in the Western Area to operationalize its action response plan on the Ebola disease.

Addressing a meeting with Medical Superintendents, Hospital Matrons and Proprietors of government and private hospitals in the Ministry’s conference hall at Youyi Building in Freetown, the Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation 1 Dr. Abu Bakarr Fofanah underscored the importance of training of staff, and the commitment of all Heads of hospitals in ensuring that appropriate structures are put in place in addressing the challenges on the current Ebola situation in the country.

He reiterated the need for trained health personnel in all established isolation wards, and stressed the need for collaboration between the hospitals and the National Task Force.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sarian Kamara reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to contain the Ebola and outlined the Ebola plans for hospital case management which included Personal Protective Equipment, Screening cases at first entry to hospital, waste disposal, information posters in all clinical area and staff sensitization among other measures put in place.

Chief Nursing Officer, Matron Hossinatu Kanu briefed the meeting about an assessment tour to hospitals, pointing out their findings, and the hospitals readiness. She described the preparedness of staff as satisfactory.

The Matrons, Medical Superintendents and Hospital Proprietors pledged their commitment to the task, and assured the public of endeavouring to meeting the challenges ahead.
