London Mining welcomes six new graduate interns

Lunsar – (30 May 2014) – London Mining is happy to announce that, this month, it took on six new graduates of the University of Sierra Leone’s Fourah Bay College as interns at their iron ore mining operation in the Marampa Chiefdom.  This is the third year that the Company has participated in the Graduate Internship Partnership – a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Youth Commission (NAYCOM).

“London Mining believes that companies must take steps to ensure that these young men and women are well prepared to work for and run businesses in Sierra Leone,” said Denis Donkin, General Manager, Human Resources, London Mining. “The Graduate Internship Partnership has a proven track record of success,” Donkin continued.  “Since 2012, London Mining has offered an additional 63 internships to graduates in their field of study and hired 16 on permanent and fixed contracts,” he said. “We believe that this engagement will help ensure a more promising future for both London Mining and Sierra Leone.”

Interns take on a wide-range of tasks that help meet their career aspirations and the Company’s needs.  Most are assigned a special project, the results and recommendations of which are presented to the Company’s senior management at the end of their internship. Yusufu Kamara, Jonathan Buckle and Mohamed Jalloh, three engineering interns from 2013, designed and built a motor control circuit that demonstrated performance control of an electric motor modelled after the type used in the Company’s process plants.

Commenting on their achievement, Joanitta Dauda, Human Resources Advisor said:  “London Mining’s management team was very impressed by the innovation demonstrated by these interns.”  Dauda continued “Their work has benefitted the Company and given them meaningful experience, which will help them compete favourably in the labour market.”   Commenting on the Partnership, Dauda said “The Partnership provides employing organisations with a valuable recruitment source.  I would like to thank NAYCOM and UNDP for their initiative and appeal to other organisations to join in on its success.”

London Mining employs nearly 1300 local staff with over 2000 other workers employed indirectly through companies contracted to London Mining.
