Jetty Construction work gets underway in Kychom
The construction project of a modern jetty sponsored by the European Union and Maritime commenced on Monday the 15th February 2010 in Kychom, Samu Chiefdom, Kambia District.
Paramount Chief of Samu Chiefdom, PC Sheibra Yek II disclosed that the purpose of the jetty is to improve the lives of boat owners, business people, and the Maritime Department against sea disasters in the country.
He said the construction of the jetty means a lot to the development of Sierra Leone and thanked the government for facilitating their work. The Paramount Chief also expressed appreciation to donors for providing the funds; emphasizing that in his chiefdom, only Kychom and Kassarie stand to benefit from the project.
Managing Director of GE-kal Construction Services, George Williams, stated that the project is to help government ease the challenge brought about by boat disasters on the high seas and make food such as foo foo, rice, palm oil, salt, pepper and fish accessible in the city.
Mr. Williams noted that government thought it fit that building the jetty would also help in improving the lives of people in the country.
He pointed out that the building is about 18 to 10 meters and would include 4 toilet facilities, one road, a communication room, one water well, and a waiting room.
Jamal Mansaray, Youth Chairman for Kychom explained that the jetty had been one of the concerns of residents of Kychom and Samu as whole.
Mr. Mansaray praised government for their timely intervention and stressed that they are ready to work with the APC government to develop the country.
He reminded government not to forget the people of Samu Chiefdom. The Youth Chairman opined that the unveiling of the construction project would served as an income generating avenue for parents to pay school fees for their kids and to up keep their homes.
Statements were also presented by Mohamed M. Suma and Gibrilla Turay (AKA) Pastor; pleading with government to put Samu Chiefdom on its development programmes.
