NEC jittery over review of constitution
The Chief Electoral Commissioner of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Ms. Christian Thorpe appealed to Journalists to critically look into the process of the Constitutional Review as there are certain constitutional issues that might affect the work of the NEC in upcoming elections.
Also in a press release issued by the Commission at the weekly press conference at the Ministry of Information and Communications, May 3 has been declared as the day for the conduct of bye elections for a Local Council in Ward 372 in the Western Urban District
The release explained that it was due to a letter from the Chief Administrator that the vacancy occurred as a result of the death of Councilor Mohamed Kamara.
It maintained that the nomination of candidates for the said bye elections will take place from Tuesday, 1st to Wednesday, 3rd April, 2014 at the NEC District Headquarters, Wellington, Freetown.
In another development May 31st has been declared as the day of bye election for Member of Parliament in Constituency 100 in the Western Area Urban District as a result of the vacancy that occurred when the Hon. Sheku Basiru Badamasi Dumbuya was elected to the office of Speaker of Parliament.
The release also stated that nominations of candidates for the said bye election will take place from Tuesday, 1st to Wednesday, 2nd April, 2014 at the NEC District headquarters at Wellington in Freetown.
The release further stated that in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 13 of 2012, the candidate’s nomination fees for the said Parliamentary bye election is Le10 million, payable to the District Returning Officer.
It concluded that other details for the nomination and conduct of these two bye elections shall be published by the NEC in due course.
