‘2018 Election will be one of the best in our History’ N’fa Alie Conteh Vows:
Chairman and Chief Returning Officer of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), N’fa Alie Conteh has in an exclusive interview with this press reaffirmed the NEC’s commitment to conducting the March 7, 2018 elections professionally and successfully, adding that he is totally convinced that with the requisite funding and adequate logistics and personnel the elections in March would be one of the first elections in the country’s history that would match international standards in the conduct of general elections.
According to him, so far, he is satisfied with the attention the government is placing on NEC and also pleased over the fact that the international community too is keeping a watch over the way and manner NEC is preparing for the March 7, 2018 elections. He maintained that as far as he is concerned NEC has the manpower and human resource to conduct the elections, adding that any additional elections personnel would soon be recruited and trained.
In the area of funding, he stated that the government is still very committed in providing the commission with Le10 billion (ten billion Leones) weekly which the commission is using to offset piecemeal initial debts and pay for other services which are mandatory on NEC. He maintained however that in order for the funds not be mismanaged, NEC has in place a department of competent auditors who see to it that the funds are used for the purpose it is given.
Meanwhile, he said that the next step NEC would be embarking on is nominations, adding that the commission has already put in place mechanisms to ensure speedy nomination phase and has also set up mechanisms to address nomination petitions in the event they arise. According to him, the NEC so far under his administration has proved that it is up to the task despite the numerous criticisms and deliberate lies aimed at discrediting himself and NEC in general. “Of course I am not surprised when people say untrue things about me or NEC because you cannot please everybody and so when you are strict and incorruptible, definitely, people will never have good or nice things to say about you,” N’fa Alie Conteh said.
