Salone Leone Navy impound two fishing vessels

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) Navy, under the command of Captain Salieu Kanu, on Friday, January 17 this year, impounded two fishing vessels, the Six Stars, and Two Stars.

Addressing newsmen at a news conference at his Murray Town Naval Base office yesterday, Captain Salieu Kanu disclosed that he received a tip off from patriotic Sierra Leoneans that the said fishing vessels were poaching at the Tuna Peninsular in the Sulima water in the Pujehun District, South of the country.

According to him he ordered one of his Forward Operations Base (FOB) Commanders, Lieutenant D. F. Koroma to go in search of the said trawlers and bring them to base, which he said Koroma did with finesse.

He further explained that the said vessels were fishing without valid licenses and fishing in the Inshore Exclusive Zone (IEZ) of this country.

He said they were now awaiting action from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, while the two Korean Captains are being detained alongside the vessels with their Vietnamese crews.

Captain Kanu also stated that Lieutenant Koroma was offered a bribe of $150,000 by the boat owner, Mr. Kar Mould. which he refused.
