MP assures support to human rights
Honorable Member of Parliament for Constituency 49 in the Port Loko District Honourable Alhaji Serry Dumbya who also doubles as Chairman of the Human Rights Committee and Member of the Legislative, Finance and Development Committee, recently assured the people of Sierra Leone of Parliament’s commitment to support the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on human rights issues in the country.
Honourable Alhaji Serry Dumbuya noted that as Chairman of the Human Rights Committee in Parliament he will always advocate for the rights of all persons living in Sierra Leone as well as campaign for the protection and welfare of women, children, persons with disability and the old people.
He observed that as Parliamentarians it is their duty to legislate proactive laws on human rights.
He also stated that he will continue to work in collaboration with human rights organization, civil society groups and individuals who are engaged in human rights work.
In her statement, Human Rights Commissioner, Mrs. Jamesina King, of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone described the celebration as significant as it highlights the issues of human rights all over the world.
She explained that the International Human Rights Day was an activity set aside on every 10th December since sixty five ago by the United Nations General Assembly to take stock of human rights in member countries.
She noted that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a common standard of achievement for all people and all nations whereas Article 1 reminds countries that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, are endowed with reasoning and a conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
She maintained that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been recognized through the protection of women’s right and the rights of people with disabilities, which she pointed out, all member nations have signed and ratified.
