School named after sacked minister’s wife
Kambia, NoV. 25 (SLENA) – Mrs. Lynda Koroma might still be having sleepless nights following the recent dismissal of her husband, Works, Housing and Infrastructure minister, Alimamy Petito Koroma, but the people of Kambia district have not allowed the incident to dampen the love and respect they have for their daughter.
A community secondary school in Kambia has been named after her, the Lynda Koroma Girls Secondary School with Paramount Chief of Magbema Chiefdom, PC Farama Tass serving as Board Chairman.
In an interview with SLENA, the proprietor of the school, Osman Joseph Kamara said the school started operation in September 2010 with seven teachers and absolutely no support from any quarters.
Asked why he named the school after Mrs. Koroma, Mr. Kamara said the woman has been helpful to the people of that chiefdom even though she hails from another Chiefdom, which is Mambolo.
“She was shocked when we informed her that the school has been named in honour of her,” the proprietor explained, adding that since that time through the help of Mrs. Koroma, the school now has its own exam code from West African Examination Council (WAEC) which enables the school to take the past BECE exams under their name.
She has also provided both teaching and learning materials to the school, he added.
Highlighting some of the successes of the school, Mr. Kamara said in the recent 2013 BECE exams, 14 candidates attempted the exams with twelve of them having clear passes.
He said presently the school has ten qualified teachers but who are still not on government payroll.
“We are contributing to the development of the girl child education in this part of the country,” the proprietor said, “that is why we have a female principal, Mrs. Issata I.B.S Kamara who is proving very well,” he added.
Mrs. Lynda Koroma of the Mano River Union Secretariat could not be reached for her comment.
