Led by His Worshipful George Herbert Akinremi Williams the Mayor of the City of Freetown, the delegation comprising His Worshipful Moses Sesay, the Mayor of Northern Makeni City, four councillors from the two cities of Freetown and Makeni the northern headquarter town, and two administrative staffs, arrived late Monday night at the Murtalla Mohamed International Airport of Lagos.

Briefing the office of the Information Attaché Thursday, His Worshipful George Herbert Akinremi Williams the Mayor of Freetown City Council said he is in Lagos the commercial city to visit the executive Governor Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), dialogue with him and some sections of his government particularly, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority(LAWMA) which is responsible for the cleanliness of the state, the lushness of its green, its landscaping and the freshness of its air which are now striking features that now welcome a first time visitor coming into that city and learn the strategies applied, which resultant effect is now visible.

“Like Lagos State, Freetown the capital Metropolis of Sierra Leone being the major and busiest gateway into Sierra Leone through its Sea-port (Queen Elizabeth 11 Quay) and the Lungi International Airport, is the first point of contact and it therefore deserves the best in terms of environmental sanitation and indeed beautification in order to sell it and create the necessary positive impression in the minds of tourists and would-be investors.

“Arguably the influx of people from the rural areas to the urban centres and the resultant rapid growth rate in population has led to a sharp increase in the volume of waste that is generated on a daily basis in cities with burstling population such as Freetown.

“This invariably has posed serious challenge overtime to successive administrations in Freetown, with each adopting different strategies with varying degrees of success. “But Since the inception of my administration, and in furtherance of President Ernest Bai Koroma’s electoral promise, we have embarked on various programmes aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier environment for Sierra Leoneans to live in: but we need to do more. So I am here to learn the strategies, patterns and techniques used to transform Lagos the Commercial City of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
