London Mining supports initiatives in Sierra Leone

London Mining is pleased to announce that during an awards event on 28th October, 2013 it made donations to three Sierra Leonean institutions following a competitive selection process.

“London Mining is committed to supporting organizations and causes that are important to the community of Lunsar, where we operate, and Sierra Leone as a whole,” said Claude Perras, Head of Sustainability London Mining.

“We’re pleased to announce that donations which totaled over twenty million Leones (Le 20,000,000.00) were awarded to the Well Woman Clinic, Child Assistance Welfare and Lunsar Community Radio (FM 99.1).

Named after the late leading Sierra Leonean educator, Mrs. Melvine Edith Patricia Stuart, who died of breast cancer in 1981, the MEPS Trust operates the Well Woman Clinic in Murray Town, Freetown.

The clinic was founded by Stuart’s niece, Mrs. Valerie Nicol, a Judge of the High Court of Sierra Leone who, in 2005, also died of breast cancer. London Mining donated Le 5 million to fund a month-long breast cancer awareness campaign and sponsored walk in October 2013.

Mrs. Agnes Labor, MEPS Trust Representative, thanked London Mining for its support, adding, “We are looking forward to having a good relationship with London Mining.”

Located on Bai Bureh Road in Freetown’s East End, Children Assistance Welfare (CAW) provides adult education and supports homeless children and the vulnerable with skills, including tailoring.

London Mining donated Le 10 million which will be used to provide tool kits for 35 young female graduates.

Closer to home, London Mining donated Le 6 million to the Lunsar Community Radio FM 99.1 to replace their damaged generator.

London Mining first evaluates all donation requests to determine whether they are aligned with its donations policy. Those requests that are deemed aligned are then considered by its Donations Committee. Subject to budgetary constraints, the Committee then selects those requests that it considers most aligned with the policy and sustainability of the company.

In 2013, twenty out of thirty five donation requests were awarded.
