FBC students to get career advice from Sierra Rutile
Mining firm, Sierra Rutile is taking part in the University of Sierra Leone’s 2013 Job Fair for graduates, on Wednesday October 2nd, to introduce students to the company and explain what skills and knowledge the mining industry is looking for in its future employees.
Sierra Rutile is itself in the process of putting an innovative Localisation Plan in place, which aims to increase the number of Sierra Leoneans in its managerial, technical and supervisory positions by fast tracking their career development. Although it already has a workforce which is 95% Sierra Leonean, the company saw that there was an opportunity to create a more sustainable workforce by training and developing a new generation of Sierra Leoneans to take on its top jobs.
It is also taking steps to ensure that Fourah Bay College (FBC) can offer the range of experience and skills the mining industry needs, and last week donated a 45KVA generator and two air conditioning units to the Nuclear Physics Laboratory so that students would be able to make regular use of the lab’s facilities.
Commenting on Sierra Rutile’s participation in FBC’s careers fair, Andy Taylor, Sierra Rutile’s Head of Operations said: “Today’s students are the workforce of tomorrow. Sierra Rutile is an organisation that is committed to developing a sustainable and skilled Sierra Leonean workforce. Part of that process entails ensuring that FBC students, who may be interested in a career in mining, have an understanding of what is required so that they focus on acquiring the skills, knowledge and learning they will need to succeed.”
