Sierra Leone Signs Air Services Agreement with Singapore
Sierra Leone, through her Minister of Transport and Aviation, and Chief Delegate to the 38th International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly in Montreal, Canada, Leonard Balogun Koroma, on September 26th, 2013 signed an Air Services agreement with the State of Singapore.
The signing ceremony, which took place at the ICAO Singapore office in Montreal Canada, was witnessed by Sierra Leone’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Sahr Kpulum, Director, Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Abubakaar Kamara, and the Chairman, Board of Directors, Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Victor Hastings Spaine. Signing on behalf of the State of Singapore was the Singapore’s Minister of Transport, LUI Tuck Yew.
Singapore Airlines is one of the World’s leading Airlines. In 2009, it was ranked 33rd in Fortune’s World’s Most Advanced Companies Rankings. The Airline presently flies to South Africa and Cairo.
Speaking in an interview from Montreal, Minister Leonard Koroma informed the Press and Public Affairs Office in the Sierra Leone Embassy in China, that Bilateral Air Services agreements are usually the first, but long step towards establishing air links and aviation cooperation between countries, and is motivated by potential benefits to air passengers via a competitive market and the wider economy.
He disclosed, studies have found that liberalized air markets can benefit from reduced air fares and more choice for passengers, increased air traffic and a consequent growth in employment and GDP.
In line with President Ernest Koroma’s dream for a prosperous nation, Minister Koroma said, making such ventures in seeking more airlines to start flying into Sierra Leone will surely help in boosting the country’s economy and in job creation.
To date, Singapore has 120 air services agreements with countries worldwide, the latest being Sierra Leone with its promising growth forecasts. Singapore Airlines Africa also flies to Cario, Egypt, and South Africa.
Singapore is one of the several countries that the Sierra Leone Embassy in the People’s Republic of China is accredited to.
