Current Ms. West Africa International, Hawa Kamara will be representing Sierra Leone at the Face Of Peace Africa (FOPA) Beauty pageant in Abuja, Nigeria on November 16th. Hawa Kamara will be travelling to Abuja, Nigeria with her chaperone and a local FOPA local representative. She needs 3 round trip tickets, costumes and other items for the trip.
CEO of Salonejamboree.com, Murtala Mohamed Kamara, who has the local FOPA franchise, said Ms Kamara was selected based on her track record of representing her country diligently in international contests.
“We had planned an audition to give every Sierra Leonean woman the opportunity to represent their country, but the timing of the event was tight and it coincided with the Holy month of Ramadan,” said Murtala, adding that there was limited time left to raise funds and organize the audition, so majority members of the committee he had set up settled for Ms. Kamara.
In an exclusive interview earlier with AYV, Ms Kamara said she feels honoured and humbled for being selected without any prior knowledge, but based on her professional conduct. She sounds upbeat to go out there and make her beloved country proud.
“I am going out there to win, not only for myself, but for my country,” she said reassuringly. “And winning FOPA will automatically make me the face of Africa, which is my long term dream.”
The 5ft 6 is a proud product of the Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) and the Methodist Girls High School. She is currently a first year Marketing student at IMATT College. She said she likes music and football and her strength is being confident always.
Meanwhile, the Salonejamboree.net CEO called on government, especially the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and well meaning companies and organizations, to take advantage of this unique opportunity to showcase Sierra Leone and the immense investment opportunities it offers.
Kamara was officially approached by the international organisers, Blumoon Imaginationz, to get a local representative at this year’s FOPA to be hosted in Abuja, Nigeria, in November 16th 2013.
Blumoon Imaginationz successfully hosted the maiden edition of FOPA last year in the Orinetal Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria, and are set for the second edition with more participating countries. FOPA is using pageantry to promote peace in Africa. Zimuzo Benson, a Psychology graduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, emerged the winner, pocketing $10, 000 and a car.
This year, the organizers have concluded plans to have contestants from UK and other African countries including Sierra Leone. Selected contestants from these countries will join the contestants in Nigeria to slug it out for the crown on November 16th.
This year, prizes have also been varied. The winner will now win $15,000 as against $10,000 the previous year. She will also get a movie contract, trip abroad and wardrobe overhaul. First runner-up will walk away with $5,000, 42 inches Plasma TV, a movie contract, a year’s beauty routine, and trip to Ghana. The second runner-up will get 27 inches Plasma TV, movie contract, a year’s beauty routine, and trip to Obudu Cattle Ranch.
According to Murtala, this opportunity is a very good platform in the rebranding efforts of Sierra Leone.
