Hawa’s appeal comes in the wake of bloody violence among young people at the Fourah Bay community in the east end of Freetown, which has already claimed two innocent lives and tension continues to mount in the area.
According to Hawa, as this year’s FOPA representative, it is her responsibility to promote peace in her country in line with the objective of the FOPA initiative and now regards herself as a peace ambassador for her country.
“I will not be confident to represent my country on an international peace platform while there is fire burning at my own home,” said Hawa, adding that young people should be able to live together in peace and harmony without resorting to violent means to resolve their differences.
She calls on His Excellency the President, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Commission (NaYCOM), the Sierra Leone Police and well meaning organizations and individuals to intervene swiftly to resolve the situation at Fourah Bay community and put sustainable mechanisms in place to prevent other communities from erupting into similar unrest.
Meanwhile, CEO of Salonejamboree.com and local representative of FOPA, Murtala Mohamed Kamara, hails the initiative of Hawa Kamara in using her status as a peace ambassador to call for an end to the disturbances at Fourah Bay community and for peaceful co-existence among young people.
“Young people tend to listen to young people better,” he said, adding that Hawa’s initiative will further help to change negative perceptions about local models and beauty pageants.
Hawa is the current Ms West Africa International, and Ms West Africa Sierra Leone 2012 and Ms Independence 2010. She was selected to represent Sierra Leone at the FOPA 2013 in Abuja on November 16th based on her track record of representing her country diligently in such contests.
5ft 6 Hawa is a proud product of the Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) and the Methodist Girls High School. She is currently a first year Marketing student at IMATT College.
