London Mining Moves to Prevent Flooding in Lunsar

With the recent start of the rainy season Lunsar Town has been experiencing heavy rainfall. In one downpour alone nearly 90 mm of rain was measured, leading to severe flash flooding in the town. Houses were overrun with water reaching halfway up their doors, and the safety of babies and children threatened.

Recognising the danger to his subjects Paramount Chief Bai Koblo Queen II approached London Mining Company (LMC) to see what action they could take to put safeguards in place. Although not within their concession area the company was quick to help, preparing for the return of heavy rains by cutting drains and culverts. LMC Managing Director Daniel Pop was amongst those on the scene, inspecting the site and highlighting the need to create easements for good drainage.

Looking to the future LMC has subsequently donated nearly Le 400,000,000 (US$91,000) to support victims of the flooding, entering into a construction agreement with Universal Ventures Ltd to prepare earthworks and drainage installations in the town. Observing that the flooding was not connected to LMC operations, Mr. Pop said: “Although the areas affected are outside our concession, humanitarian assistance is central to London Mining’s Community Investment Policy and, in that regard, we have acted to minimize the negative impact of the flooding.”

Noting that LMC had started work to unblock waterways and install culverts in the town Mr. Pop said that the company had also discussed with Paramount Chief Koblo Queen the concept of water easements, and how essential it was that these be kept clear in order that water flow unimpeded during storms. Commenting that the flooding may have been exacerbated by the planting of vegetable gardens in areas that should be the water easement zones, and also by the dumping of litter and other waste in the waterways, Mr. Pop stressed the need for regular self-maintenance.
