Sierra Leone Water Company Manager Warns Chiefs, MDAS

The newly transferred Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) Branch Manager in Kenema, Mr. Alimamy Kolifa Kamara, has warned chiefs in Kenema to desist forthwith the habit of extracting monies from interested parties coming with proposals to mine in the Kamboi hills.

The area, he said, is a reserved forest where the water supply outfit, SALWACO has its water catchment base and mining in that reserved area would deprive the people of Kenema from having a safe and pure supply of drinking water.

The SALWACO Branch Manager said the mining and felling of trees within and around the reservoirs has been the reason why the people of Kenema are deprived of safe drinking water of late.

He disclosed that they have held a series of management meetings and set up systems that will look into the treatment of water, equitable distribution of water, bouncer operation, among other ideas, adding that they are also going to be monitoring Kamboi hills for which the warning is now made handy.

He said: “We have eight sources of water in the Kamboi hills and those are the only sources of our water supply. We are supposed to supply 2,000 cubic litres of water per day to meet individual needs which span about 120 litres per day out of 150,000 to 155,000 people in Kenema.

He said out of such number they can only cater for about 28,600 people, out of which each person is capable of using 15 litres per day due to the water shortage in the Kamboi hills.

Mr. Kamara called on the chiefs in Kenema, local authorities, civil society bodies, the Office of National Security (ONS), the media, and the police force, to come onboard in this campaign and help make it a success.

Away from the protection of the water sources issue, Mr. Kamara also said stated institutions including MDAs are reluctant in paying their water rates, this time he said we will be left with no option than to cut them off from our supply system.
