Medical Council tasks Quack Doctors
Due to the proliferation of medical institutions, of which some do not have the required medical personnel to operate a hospital or clinic, the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Council (SLMDC) is forced to institute pragmatic steps to address the issue of quack doctors and other unprofessional activities associated with the medical profession in the country.
The president of the SLMDC Dr. Arthur Williams recently paid a working visit to various public and private hospitals and clinics to acquaint himself and see how these medical institutions are administering medical treatments to patients.
He said during his visits he found out that some clinics were doing well, others were not up to the task, and some need to be upgraded with medical facilities.
Dr. Arthur Williams the former chief medical officer of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation said quack doctors are causing harm to the health of the unsuspecting public and the council best halt their activities if it decentralizes its operations in the districts and the regions.
He said the majority of the quack doctors are living in the rural communities with no medical qualifications, just because they are selling patients drugs they have declared themselves as doctors…
He advised all medical doctors to register with the SLMDC, noting that anyone found to be a quack doctor will be severely bitten by the law.
Regarding unprofessional conduct the council is dealing with those issues with the view to promoting discipline.
