West Midlands hospital staff donate to Sierra Leone village
Nursing staff at Penn Hospital, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, United Kingdom have, for the second year running, donated second hand clothing and books to residents of Jaiama Sewafe. Last year, a consignment of clothes, shoes and books were sent to residents for distribution gratis. The staff at the Home Treatment & Referral and Assessment Service took up the challenge when a member of their team told them about the venture. According to Pearl Garwood, who has donated a sack full of books and clothes, “It is worthwhile to see some of these clothes and books go to those who may need it. It is a small token of good will to support, especially students, who want to make a difference in their lives”.
Rachel Kirkland, a senior staff at the Home Treatment team, said that “rummaging through my stuff to donate to this venture was the least I could do”.
Jayne Gibbons of the Referral and Assessment team, who was also instrumental in the venture, intimated that “every little helps”.
One of the recipients of last year’s consignment, Ibrahim Kondeh expressed his gratitude to the staff for their donation.
This year, the staff have collected three barrels of clothes and six boxes of books for the residents and the local secondary school respectively. The books include novels, text books on health related subjects like mental health and other miscellaneous subjects.
Joy Edwards, a senior nurse practitioner in the Home Treatment department stated that “this is the least we can do for deserving children”. Another staff member, who chose to be anonymous, but initiated and co-ordinated the venture expressed his pride and thanks to all staff members who contributed to the success of this venture.
It is hoped that this will be the beginning of a long lasting relationship between these two far flung communities.
