Ambassador Kanu Blasts Detractors
Following release of a report by the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on the Bumbuna shooting incident resulting in the death of one Musu Conteh, in an orchestrated industrial strike action by African Minerals workers on June 16th, 17th and 18th this year, the Executive Director of the Institute of International Law, Ambassador Alieu Kanu has condemned comments by his detractors tagging him as an agent of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Talking to our reporter from his Pademba Road Office in Freetown, he said negative words of him have been proven futile as he together with the team charged with the responsibility to investigate and report on the matter have finally concluded their assignment without hindrance.
According to him, findings in the report indicted ten members of the Sierra Leone Police Force for using excessive force against unarmed workers.
The report has been forwarded to the Board of the Institute for International Law, which will have to diagnose the elements of crime to ascertain violations of human rights and advise further on the next level of action to be taken.
He said “if we allow lawlessness and injustice to have space in our society, it will portray the country in a rather worse manner”. He said they will not sit by and watch a few people trample upon the fundamental rights of others in the country.
