MP blasted over child neglect

In a recent visit by the Kanga Schools Project team to Nyama Islamic Mission in Bo, the Member of Parliament of Constituency 69 Ward 232 Bo Honourable Legacy Sankoh boycotted the welcoming of the Sierra Unite/Kanga Schools Project team. In this particular welcoming ceremony, people from all walks of life, high and low were present to thank the Kanga Schools Project team for their philanthropic work done. When the Member of Parliament was questioned by other dignitaries for taking a ‘French leave’, he retorted that it was because special priority has been given to the children instead of them.

As a matter of fact the Kanga School Project visit was slated particularly to assess the progress made so far in making use of the computers and books given to the Nyama Secondary School. The visit of the Kanga Schools Project team to the Namya Islamic Secondary School situated on the Bo/Kenema high way which took place on the 9th of December 2009, saw the zest and concern shown by Madam Barbie Davies and team from Australia to help improve the educational infrastructure of the country. Madam Barbie Davis a business woman engaged in direct and indirect business is the brain behind the Kanga Schools Project based in Sydney Australia.

In the opening remarks of the chairman of the Kanga Schools Project, Mr. Mohamed Murray Kanneh expressed his disappointment over the MP’s behavior and he categorically stated that the visit of the Kanga team to Namya Islamic School was to talk to the children and see whether they are making good use of the books and computers given to them and not to adults as they have already exhausted their youthful days. Madam Barbie Davis in particular placed more emphasis on the education of the children especially the girl child. She said, “When you educate a girl you educate a nation”.

Though the blunder made by the Hon. Member of Parliament was not an issue to be nagging about, yet the distinguished guest Madam Davis from Australia saw the parliamentarian’s attitude as disappointing and unwarranted as the priority given to the school children is of national concern and the education of children is every body’s business more especially him being a parliamentarian he should have prioritized the education of children than any other thing in his Constituency.

However, in a disappointing mood of parents, teachers and even senior school pupils over the MP’s un-civilized behavior the administrative secretary of Namya Islamic School Mr.Sidi Y.M Kuyateh ordered the meeting to go on as the absence of the Hon. Member of Parliament should not distract them from what they are doing. Sounding the opinion of some the elders present at the welcoming ceremony, they lamented that the president’s call to attitudinal change would gain grounds if only some of the people with whom he work are ready to change their attitudes for good. Finally, in the midst of all obstacles the visit of Sierra Unite/Kanga Schools Project was a laudable success.
