FBC students stage march
Students of Fourah Bay College constituent college under the University of Sierra Leone, yesterday marched to State Avenue and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over what they called excesses of police brutality.
The protest march was down-staged on Monday August 6th with a mammoth crowd of students who say they demanded the release of their colleagues who were arbitrary arrested by members of the police force and now under custody, or else promise to sit down strike in front of the State Avenue and CID office premises.
In an interview with a cross-section of students, our Sierra Express Media reporter it was intimated that the reason for the sit down strike rested on what they called police brutality and unprofessional conduct, they said they discovered the heavy presence of police personnel at the campus premises as they came to take the ongoing second semester promotional exams Monday morning August 6th, when approximately 26 of their colleagues were beaten and arbitrary arrested by the police over what the police called the recent row of strike action between aggrieved students and Administration of last week, August 3rd
According to Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG) Phillip Wellington in charge of Freetown, he said the heavy presence of police at the campus atmosphere was due to a tip off they received from an anonymous source, that there was ongoing plans by the students to continue their rowdy behavior, which he said was the reason for the arrest to be effected to quell down any further mayhem that the students may be planning.
He noted further that the arrest is a temporary one guided to disperse any further action by aggrieved students to vandalise again against administrative personnel’s and properties, but their release will be very soon.
According to a source at State House, it is revealed that the chancellor under the guise of President Ernest Koroma has ordered the immediate release of the 26 arrested students.
