Africell Turns WASSCE Student Millionaire
The premises of the Africell headquarters at Wilberforce was filled with emotion and pride when a total of Le 28, 850,000 was dished to fifty-one cash prize winners and nine others who won household items ranging from plasma TV, Generator, Freezers units and other valuable items on the occasion of the first presentation ceremony of prizes to winners of the Africell Ramadan Hidden Treasure Hunt 2, on Friday July 27.
The grand prize winner for the first phase draws Ishmael M Bockaire a WASSCE student of the Services Secondary School in Freetown won a whopping sum of Le20,000,000. Nine consolation prizes of Le 300,000, Twenty-five of Le 200,000 each, two of Le 150,000 each, eight of Le100, 000 each, and six of Le 50,000 each were handed out.
Speaking at the ceremony, Africell’s Administrative Director, Abdul Aziz Gabisi said Africell is a company that acknowledges and respects all faiths and religious systems in Sierra Leone as they have always worked simultaneously with the system.
He said the company is pleased to join Muslims in Sierra Leone and the world over in observing the holy month of Ramadan.
Explaining the promotion proper, Africell’s Head of Media Relations, Nancy L Joseph said Africell subscribers are required to send blank text or call 777 at a cost of 10 units to automatically qualify for the daily selection to take part in the daily draw. She said the company gives back 10 on-net units to the subscriber for each call or text they make. He added that the on-net units last till 12 midnight of the same day.
Nancy said the treasure hunt show is held live daily on SLBC TV with simultaneous broad-cast on major radio stations across the country, between 7pm to 8pm from Mondays to Saturday.
In line with the 2008 Finance Act, which requires that each lottery winning prize reaching the prize of Le 500,000 should attract a 10% withholding tax, Nancy said the deduction has been made of the required sums. She said the sum of two million Leones was recovered from the prizes and paid into the coffers of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) as withholding tax and provided the tax receipts to the winner.
The lucky winner, Ishmael M Bockaire thanked Africell for their marvelous promotion. Explaining how he partook in the ongoing Africell Hidden Treasure Hunt, Ishmael said his friends asked him to play football in the morning hours, and then later, his friends asked him to participate in the Africell hidden treasure hunt 2 promotion. He said he only had 11 units and decided to call 777. In the evening he was called up by staff of Africell and told that he had won the grand prize of the day, which is twenty million Leones. He thank Africell for coming to his aid as he has been thinking of how, he will continue his education if the WASSCE results were to come out. He assures Africell that he will be a goodwill ambassador for them.
