Radiation Protection Inspects African Minerals Loading Site

The Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Board formerly Radiation Protection Board has completed a pre-shipment scanning ores at the African Minerals loading site at Pepel in the Port Loko District.  The inspection is part of the Secretariat’s responsibility to ensure that all mineral ores including iron ore exported are scanned for radioactive contamination before shipment out of Sierra Leone in line with the Code of conduct of the IAEA on transportation of radioactive materials.  (Photo: Scientists from the Radiation Protection Board )

Lead inspector from the Radiation Protection Board Secretariat Mr. Abdulai Abass Kargbo noted that the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act 2011 reinforce the rules and regulations of the secretariat and noted that the inspection is a routine exercise so as to ensure that the level of radiation exported is within allowable limit.

The four hour inspection of the over one hundred and sixty–eight thousand metric tons of Iron ore involved three scientific officers namely Messer’s Abdulai Abass Kargbo, Umaru Bun-Tejan, Ms. Martha Tutu George, and a technician Mr. Charles Hindolo Vandy.

Taking the team on tour for the inspections, African Minerals Senior Port and Rail Scheduler, James Sinclair said that African Minerals will seek to comply with all regulatory standard to ensure that the export of mineral ores are certify to ensure that compliance is adhered to and noted that since the exploration and exportation started there has not been any accident.

The inspectors also monitor radiation levels around the immediate surroundings of the iron ore pile including rivers.

It could be recalled that Parliament in June 2011 approved the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act 2011 which makes provision for the establishment of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority to exercise regulatory and supervisory control for the beneficial and peaceful use of radioactive substances and their applications including inspection and enforcement throughout Sierra Leone.
