Handicap International agitates for disables

The Handicap International organization in collaboration with the Mano River Program has ended a two days workshop aimed at mainstreaming disability issues in Sierra Leone.

The ceremony which featured twenty-one Non Governmental Organisations was held at GEEM Building, 58 Jones Street, Freetown. The focus of this organisation is to improve the conditions of the disabled, as currently persons with disabilities are faced with serious challenges on how to cope with their lives.

The NGO has existed in Sierra Leone since 1996, working closely with other organisations in ensuring the promotion of the rights of disable persons.

Speaking on this issue the Community based Rehabilitation Advisor; LUC Patriot said “Mainstreaming Disability Workshop” is aimed at enhancing the promotion of persons with Disabilities and their rising challenges.

He noted further that the workshop is held to determine the underlying necessities that would ensure the achievement of the country’s Millennium Development Goals. Mr. Alpha Serray Bangura, Coordinator for Young Voices lend his voice to the issue by saying that the main objective of the workshop is to ensure that Development partners understand the new disability Acts and the concept of mainstreaming it under the United Nations Convention on the right of person with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Manager for the Sierra Leone Community based Rehabilitation and Empowerment for the Blind program, Mr. Kabbakeh Noah, gave an overview of the prevailing social conditions with which persons with Disabilities (PWDs) constantly interact in their everyday life. He highlights both personal and broader experiences endured by PWDs especially both the blind and visually impaired persons (BLUPs) in the wider social environment.

The program was supported by European Union in collaboration with Disable persons Organizations in Sierra Leone.
