Let’s call it the new dawn of sportsmanship

Sierra Leone of late is raising veils in sporting records as the country’s football team, Leone Stars, continues to justify its latest ranking of 59th, in the FIFA world ranking list and 10th in Africa above the likes of Nigeria and others.  (Photo: Idrissa Kargbo, Sierra Leone’s home-grown marathon runner)

Over the weekend, we saw the national side, Leone Stars, in combat battle with their Equatorial Guinean counterparts and produced a deserving result that much wins the hearts of football loving Sierra Leoneans.

By the same margin, Sierra Leone witnessed its first ever marathon race ran to salvage support and funds for children whose lives and ways are controlled and led by the street. It was all victory for Sierra Leone as runner 46, Idrissa Kargbo, mulled over the marathon to a record breaking victory, covering a distance of 10 kilometers –equivalent to 26 miles within a speed time of 2hrs 46 min, 46 sec. Sports is one thing that is hugely followed in Sierra Leone and it has values in speaking terms to seal a string of camaraderie across the various social creeds, race and nations.

The test case in the first place has been to introduce the marathon race as a way of bringing people together in a common cause to fight the menace of street children in the society of Sierra Leone.

Sport, to note it better, is becoming a new found religion in this part of the world. It is also used as a trauma healing means especially in situations where taking children from streets life requires and warrant such need.

It was hair raising events seeing volunteers run for the future of children of Sierra Leone and the most memorable one can remember was the contribution of amputees and disabled persons in the race. It was a shed of spirit to give perfect boost to the love of children whose future is clustered in doom.

The marathon race and the Leone Stars away encounter are joint glory to the name of Sierra Leone as both events recorded a good public relation for the war torn West African country. When the participating athletes were leaving shores of the United Kingdom for Sierra Leone, they were addressed by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary in the UK and speared lots of good comments about Sierra Leone.

The improvement of Sierra Leone’s national side Leone Stars is another making part in the sport commentary of the western media. Perfect brands like AC Milan’s Rodney Strasser, the likes of Mohamed Poboski Bangura, Ibrahim Teteh Bangura, Mohamed Kallon, Sheriff Suma and Ibrahim Kargbo have occupied the spot in hearts of sport loving fans and their fame is doing lots of good to the image of the country.

At this juncture we want to say big thank you the coach Olof Mattsson, his technical team, the Sierra Leone Football Association and the players as individuals.

This sporting recognition is indeed becoming the new dawn of football and sporting era of the current crops of Sierra Leoneans. We’ve heard great triumphant stories and the legendary of great footballers like the Kama Dunbuyas, the Ismail Dyfans, the Prince Toes, the Brima Attouga Kamaras, the Ibrahim Mazola Kamaras, the Akin Nolas and the rest. This legendaries must be replicated and God willing the country will meet that cross road.
