Youth dream center boosts youth volunteers

A non-governmental organization, Youth Dream Center (YDC) in collaboration with the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) and Community Action for Psychosocial Counseling has started an extensive week long workshop for volunteering youths in Freetown.

The training which is being conducted at the Milton Margai College Campus Goderich, brought together eighteen participants to build their knowledge in Social Works and advanced education to deliver onward training for dropout youths in their various communities. The training also focused on building viable youth capacity for economic and national development.

In his opening statement the founder and Executive Director, Captain Joseph Syl Kaitibie said, the Capacity building project was espoused by Canada through voluntary Innovative Aid.

The Director informed the participants that, the workshop was an opportunity for them to improve on their knowledge and skills so that they can be able to effectively and efficiency train dropout youths across the Country.

Most of the participants, the Director said, were school leaders who have voluntarily decided to help the dropout youths and elementary pupils to learn skill and improve their educational knowledge. He disclosed that since last year they have been providing scholarships and medical supports to the volunteers/beneficiaries. He further informed them that, partnering with MMCET, Action for psychosocial Counseling and others to conduct training for the beneficiaries will help to facilitate the works of the project. He assured that, YDC will after the training become a Corporate, Social and Psychosocial counseling workers.

He maintained that, youth were the poorest in the country, noting that many youth are less educated and unemployed but it would be essential for them to engage in working for YDC.

In his statement, the Vice Principal MMCET Dr. Evan Johnson said he was happy that the workshop is held at such material time. According to him, it was essential for the youths to be assembled and trained to address serious issues of national interest. He went on to say that the efforts of YDC is worth it for which they deserve applauds as well as commendation. He finally pledged the college’s commitment to working with YDC to promote education in Sierra Leone.

A senior Lecturer, of Education Department MMCET, Dr. Abdulai Mayim Konjoh said the youth need to be empower in education so that they will in turn empower the nation. He maintained that, after the training, beneficiaries would now serve as ambassadors of change in the society.

Acting Executive Director also informed that it was not easy to assemble and build the skills and knowledge of the people, yet YDC has done it all to promote and develop Sierra Leone.
