Artisanal Mining Destroys Forestry Reserves  – Activities of Artisanal miners in forestry reserve areas in the south, east, and northern parts of Sierra Leone are seriously depleting theses reserve areas to an extent of removing forest covers and exposing these reserved areas to erosion and other attendant environmental degradation. Artisanal mining which has of late become a luxurious trade for both miners and forestry law enforcement officers go for good, diamonds zircon are which are of in high demand in the international market.

Village Headman, 11 others ArrestedThe Trans-national organized crime unit (TOCU) of the Sierra Leone Police on Saturday 1oth March 2012 with support from the government of Ireland, launched an operation code name Desert Breeze two at Macdonald village in the Freetown peninsular where approximately one hundred acres of Marijuana/plantation were destroyed and 12 suspects, including the village Headman madam Francess. O. Williams were arrested.

The cultivation of marijuana in the village has become a major source of livelihood for majority of the inhabitants. It is like an industry.

MODCOM Gets Wellington Central Market – The minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Richard Conteh has recently handed over the construction site for a multi-purpose market center at Willington to MODCOM Construction Company.

Le 200M for UDM ConventionWednesday 14th March 2012 edition of the exclusive newspaper reported that the over a raw mining cost for hasting a two days national party convention for the newly registered United Democratic movement (UDM) party is estimated at Le 200 million.

This was disclosed by the interim national leader of the United Democratic Movement Party (UDM) Mohamed Bangura.

Mohamed Bangura noted that over 90% of the overall estimated has been secured. He revealed that currently the UDM party has raised the sum of the 170 million Leone with only Le 30 million remaining.

NEC Warns Political PartiesThe National Electoral Commission has warned that the whistle for political campaign has not been blown thus they have noted with gave concern that individuals and political parties are public presenting themselves in communities as prospective candidates for the November 2012 polls.

The Commission is hereby informing potential political parties and individual candidates to refrain from premature political campaigning.
