Campaign for equality certify Calaba town youths
More than 15 youths from the Calaba town Progressive Youth Organisation (CPYO) have received certificates after a week-long training on project writing and community development among other things.
The training which was facilitated by the Goodwill Ambassador of Calaba town Murtala Mohamed Kamara (in photo) is part of his six months short term plan to provide technical support and capacity building and institutional strengthening to the CPYO.
Speaking last weekend at the certification ceremony at the CPYO office main motor road Calabatown, Kamara who is also the founder of SaloneJamboree, Sierra Leone’s foremost Arts & Entertainment magazine thanked the Campaign for Equality, a civil society group for providing the training. Kamara stressed the importance of the training stating that no amount of money will buy knowledge. He assured the group that this training will not be the first or the last. He admonished the new grandaunts to put to use what they have learnt.
Kamara recalled: “I once stated that the Goodwill Ambassador which was bestowed upon me last year by this same community comes with a great responsibility. I made a promise that I will live up to the expectations,” he said.
He added:“It is better to teach a man how to fish than to give him fish regularly,” the 2011 SLMTV Journalist of the said. He reminded that gathering that Calaba town lacks almost everything and it is the responsibility of its youths to change the face of this deprived community.
“We have trained you and we will also ensure that you get the required tools to carry out your task. The future of this community now lies in your hands. It is your responsibility to take that leadership,” he said.
Concluding, Kamara donated a Dell desktop computer Pentium 3 to the CPYO.
Chairman of the ceremony, Rev. Abraham Sesay-Jones also admonished the youths about life. He emphasized that youths have a greater responsibility to their communities and therefore urged them to always try to improve themselves. Rev. Sesay-Jones also cautioned the youths to stay away from violence as according to him the 2012 elections are very crucial to Sierra Leone.
Ibrahim Bah, communications analyst for UNDP who is also a resident of the community was also one of the speakers.
Representative of the National Youths Commissioner, Mr. Bangura said the CPYO is a formidable youth organization. He assured the group that his commission will always work with them to bring development to that community.
On his part, Mr. Alex Bangura, Executive Director for Campaign for Equality thanked the youths and the people of Calaba town for their support. He urges them to make good use of what they have learned and promised that his organization will commit itself to work with the CPYO.
One of the Imams of the community, Sheik Issa Ghalie Sesay disclosed that they will soon embark on a community prayer meeting for Calaba town and Sierra Leone in general.
The program was climaxed by distribution of certificates to various youths.
The CPYO is a registered youth organization with the Freetown City Council and the National Youths Commission. The organization came into existence out of a passion to develop the Calaba town community.
