Press statement from the Sierra Leone Society for the Welfare of the Aged (SLSWA)

The SLSW views with concern the recent publication by Sierra Express Media of allegations by unknown residents of KGVI Memorial Home about “Inhuman and degrading living conditions at the Kissy Home”. The Society wishes to state categorically that such are unfounded and untrue.

The management of the King George VI Memorial Home is the major project of SLSWA. This is done by a small group of volunteers who constitute the council.

The actual running of the home is a collaborative effort between the council and employed staff under the supervision of the matron. The running of the home has been affected by the sudden death of former matron Mrs. Genevieve Coker who ran the Home form 1999 to 2011.

During her illness and subsequent demise efforts were made to secure a replacement. This proved difficult as qualified staff demand much more than our budget can carry. This greatly affected the smooth running of the Home.

Similarly the Government’s planned relocation of the Home from Kissy to Grafton has also taken its toll on the smooth running of the Home. However the SLSWA has been making strenuous efforts to put things in a place to ensure a smooth operation of the Home.

The society is also using this platform as an opportunity to inform the public that it runs the home mainly from proceeds on fundraising efforts. We depend on the goodwill of well wishers and donors at home and abroad. Funds are also obtained from membership fees. The government gives a modest subvention from time to time.

Admission to the home is free.
