Global call against poverty line up demands

The Global Call against poverty Sierra Leone are calling for an end to poverty and inequality with four years left for the Minimum Development Goal 2015.  At a press Conference on Monday 17th October at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalist Headquarter Freetown, Civil Societies in Sierra Leone have lined up eight demands for World Leaders to actualize the Millennium Development Goal as set out in the United Nation’s Millennium Declaration of 2000.  Among the eight demands are debt cancellation and aid.

Civil societies in Sierra Leone believe that debt should be canceling none selectively and unconditionally.  Given the paltry nature of the debt relief offered at the G8, it leaves Africa with over US200 billion of debt and annual repayment obligation for exceeding the debt relief as monies freed from debt repayment will be used to support social and infrastructure sectors. In the area Aid, CSOs Sierra Leone believed that rich donor Governments and International institutions must urgently provide the major increase in the quality and quantity of the resources that is, meeting and exceeding the 0.7 aid target necessary for the eradication of poverty and promote social justices.

Aminata Kelly Lamin for Network Movement for Justices and Development SL demand the political will from World Leaders  another to get them the World they want in 2012 noting that the is experiencing increase levels of poverty more than ever before whose devastating effect are felt in poor Countries such as Sierra Leone.

It is also believed that increase in poverty, unaccountable political and corporate job losses, falling state resources and lower levels of remittances are causes for an increase poverty.

It is the general views of Civil Societies in Sierra Leone that it will be difficult to actualize the vision of 2015 as a result of divert  dynamics of Southern Countries to meet the goal, pointing corruption as a major factor.

They concluded that seventy percent of the country resources be it aid or revenue locally generated goes to contracts in which the value of money is not felt.

Among the demands are Public Accountability and Just Government, Women’s Rights and Gender Justices, Trade Justice, Climate Justice, Peace and Security.
