Changing The World
One of Sierra Leone’s most talented young poets, Jusu Jaka Yawmah, shares with us a second piece of the wonderful poetry from his collection ‘Jay’s Anthology.’
I woke up this morning from my sleep
Thanking the Shepherd for the dearly keep
And the tenacious care to His numerous flock of sheep.
Faintly, I can hear the signatures; the cocks crow, the infants weep
To tell all asunder, “It is dawn!” Above the skies, I can see the sun creep
Slowly but surely, in due timing, like the proverbial turtle climbing a steep.
But I did wake up with a word,
And that is to change the world.
The sellers echoed, the birds chirped in the distance
Amidst the noisy confusion, I ought to keep my balance
And to uphold my purpose, I must buckle up endurance
With a steady focus and pace, leaving nothing to chance.
My task is time-bound, every second with its significance
And the zest to conquer spews like a blazing furnace.
Because I woke up with a word,
Which is to change the world.
The routine is quite unusual and demanding in every way
The things I do clearly differ from those I did the previous day.
But peace was certain, and emanating from the depths of the mind.
In my dream, this peace was duly enjoyed by all; too hard to find;
Dignity, tolerance, compassion, justice and equity all combined
To give a lasting and amiable satisfaction to every human-kind.
And so strong was this word,
“We need to change the world”
The Sun is passing, dwindling my chances, twilight is in full pursuit
The obstacles are inherent but I must keep my eyes on the summit.
My time, energy, strength, leisure I painstakingly submit
To this lasting universal change, I kindheartedly commit.
Though I strive, though I crave, though I willingly forfeit,
I must keep my gaze fixed and never yield to defeat.
So I must hold fast to my word,
To bring this change to the world.
The day is passing, I lose courage, twilight almost done!
I slumped in total despair, thinking all hopes are gone…
And suddenly, from within, deep within me… I can see!
Yes! I’ve got it! My despair formed part of the raging sea,
My focus, my vision, my resolve, my energy, they all possibly
Gave beauty to my dream, and make it just what it seem to be.
Yes! I can! I can change the world,
Meet my dreams and uphold my word.
The change the world needs is inside,
And together we can if we all decide.
As such, you and I form the word, “we”.
But first I know it must start inside of me.

This is an absolute brilliant piece man! Rightly said, if we can all find that motivation from within, impossible will be “nothing”.

The change the world needs is inside, and together we can if we ALL decide. Because you and I form the word”we”, So I’m gonna first start with inside of ”me”.
