Showcasing Jay’s Anthology

Jusu Jaka Yawmah, a Sierra Leonean medical student and aspiring physician currently residing in Ghana, found at the age of 17, during his 5th form at Prince of Wales School that he had a gift for writing – in particular poetry.

Jay Jay (as he is popularly known), over the next decade wrote his first book “Jay’s Anthology,” a compendium of poems including a treatise on “7 Obstacles You must Defy” with “Myriads Of Wisdom”.   It is both inspirational and religious, containing a contemporary praxis for standard living, written in a simple and unpretentious style.

The inception of Jay’s Anthology could have brought a breakthrough in Jay Jay’s life, however, his plan, though brilliant in its conception seems to have failed because of inadequate funding.  During his publication he lost his dear Mother in February this year, and as such he only produced 24 gratis copies which he handed out to a few for their comment(s) and support.

Among Jay Jay’s work are several poems he has agreed to showcase internationally through Sierra Express Media.  Among his collections are epic, pastoral, religious, haiku, inspirational and symbolic types.  His first poem we showcase is vividly political, “To the President,” which Jay Jay states highlights his artistic flair in speaking up, especially for the suffering masses in his country and continent as a whole.

TO  THE  PRESIDENT

We come in unison to petition our case and comments
As we put in words the various concerns and public dissents.
All protocols observed, all writings done with genuine intents
Representing the masses, as an ordinary pen, I’m not a dissident.

For declaring assets, we say your decision was prudent
For maintaining our roads, we acknowledge the investment
For the alternate current supply, we thank you for the improvement
But for the anguish of many, we write with an artistic temperament.

With a big applaud we commend you for the recent endorsement
Appreciating the Medics and other services with a credible increment
As we pray for wisdom and insight to pioneer more fruitful establishments
May these increments and endorsements be consistent and permanent.

Inasmuch we crave your indulgence and seek your humble consent
We ask for a retro- and intro-spection; a look into the past and present
Though we are undaunted, unabated, convinced and very much confident
To say there is a stark difference between the past and present incumbent

Please visit the parastatals, especially the offices of procurement
Check duly, without malice, keep an open eye for any infringement
Do a second check, please check every proceed, every document
And be brave to let us know if they deserve any form of indictment.

I guess the masses, should be justly represented in the government
Though they are rejected by those representing their various constituents
Persuaded with promises that were so sweet, touching and persistent
They gave it all and undoubtedly voted them into seats of parliament.

Are they representing their various constituents or selfish interests?
Should the plea for attitudinal change be inscribed as a commandment?
Does the Coat of Arms and Constitution need a change or amendment?
Does the National Anthem need an upgrade or maybe, a little adjustment?

We are abreast with corrupt happenings, though denials are insistent
And thus with utter dismay, we ask, “Has the ACC become so diffident
That its potent venom is resisted by the higher class and the cabinet?”
With eagle eyes, we are earnestly looking for a remarkable precedent.

Freetown stinks! No one blinks! And we don’t seem to be content
Living with decadence and putrefaction where diseases are prevalent.
Mosquitoes breed, fleas feed where the electorates are residents
To all the ailments and woes found under this blessed firmament.

My apologies! Please excuse my emotions, I’m not being impudent
But stressing that the ideals of the local government are improvident
We look forward to ideas from minds that are astute and competent
With so much filth, we ask, “Are we paying taxes at our detriments?

From the provinces, slums of Kroo bay to Regimanuel’s apartments
Everyone complains of hunger and hardship; we are really despondent
About jobs, increase in prices, even to the cheapest condiment
Which is now expensive. Sir, the effect is bizarre and deterrent!

We  look forward to a change, and one that is truly independent
Please consider options that are timely, workable and indulgent
In the office of the first Gent; His Excellency, the power is inherent
But not infinite! Please have our warmest regards, Mr President.
