Radio Bar Kulan: front runner in peace building, says Somali Football Federation

The Somali Football Federation (SFF) recognized Radio Bar Kulan as the frontrunner in peace building efforts through football programmes in Somalia. Radio Bar Kulan is a public service radio station broadcasting non-partisan news, information, culture, entertainment and development programmes and is noted for its coverage of Somali sports.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday 27-09-2011 from Mogadishu, The president of Somali Football Federation, Said Mahmoud Nur, said Radio Bar Kulan played a key role in encouraging the football for peace programmes in the country which intended to guide youth from falling into the hands of criminals.

“On behalf of the Somali Football family I am very grateful to Radio Bar Kulan for its great influence in encouraging public integration, peace and sports promotion in the country…”the President said .

The statement said that from March this year the station worked with SFF in awareness and football for peace programmes which has assisted at least 4000, according to the statistics of the Somali Football Federation Media Department.

The statement added Radio Bar Kulan was the sole radio station that broadcasted live coverage of the recent peace soccer tournament for Mogadishu’s 4 districts of Kaaraan, Abdi Aziz, Hodon and ! Wardhigley. These four are the worst-war ravaged districts in the Somali capital and the competition was held to encourage the return of people to their homes and the reopening of the streets in those areas.

“We demand from the station’s management to go forward with their efforts toward encouraging the football for peace programmes in Somalia” the president said in his press release.

The Somali Football Federation recognized Radio Bar Kulan as the Radio Station of the Year in 2011.
