Sex Workers Beat Kenema Police
A police constable is alleged to have been assaulted and beaten by sex workers in Kenema City over the weekend after he attempted to come to the rescue of an elderly man who had been involved in a verbal confrontation with the women.
Speaking to Sierra Express Media, Detective Mustapha Massaquoi who is currently investigating the matter revealed that Constable Joseph Mansaray, attached to the Family Support Unit of the Kenema police was attacked by irate sex workers after he tried to intervene between the sex workers and an elderly man.
Joseph Mansaray was said to have been on patrol in the red light business district of Kenema in the late hours on the night when he came across a group of sex workers and an elderly man who claimed his phone had been stolen by one of them.
According to Detective Massaquoi, one of the sex workers reportedly stole a cell phone and other valuables belonging to the elderly man. The theft is said to have occurred while he was having intercourse with the sex worker. On realizing that he had lost his phone and other valuables including cash, the man had raised an alarm resulting in other sex workers coming to the rescue of their colleague and raining abuses at the man.
It was during the fracas that Constable Mansaray intervened and tried to settle the matter by taking the accused to the police. On hearing that their colleague was under arrest, the other sex workers immediately assaulted him, tearing off his uniform and taking away his handcuffs and other paraphernalia. Passer-bys rescued the police from the grip of the women. All of them later escaped and up till now none of them have been apprehended.
Meanwhile, the police have mounted a search patrol to locate the culprits.
Kenema has now become one of the provincial cities in the country where the rate of prostitution has become high.
Investigations reveal most of the sex workers in Kenema are school going girls, who claim poverty is the cause for their choice of work. “This is the only means of us getting money to feed and pay our school fees,” one sex worker who asked not to be named said.
