Prisons Benefit From Prison Watch

Inmates and officers in the Pademba Road Prisons will now have the chance of watching international matches and events on television as a result of the gift of a DSTV Satellite transmitter, and its paraphernalia, including a television set thanks to Prison Watch.

The gifts were donated by Prison Watch, a local humanitarian agency in a bid to facilitate educational and entertainment programs for officers and prisoners.

In an exclusive interview with Fakai Mambu, head of Prison Watch, he said the aim of his organization is to help in the reformation process of prisoners and to also ensure that their fundamental right is duly protected. He revealed that since 2002 Prison Watch has been working with the prisons department in the country and other development partners that relate with the prisons service.

According to Mr. Mambu since the inception of the new director at the Sierra Leone Prisons Service, much infrastructural and administrative development has taken place and that his organization is very much proud to be part of such development.

He further revealed that the Justice Sector Development Programme and UNDP have also immensely contributed in such development at the department. Mambu said that Prisons Watch is ready to collaborate with all stake holders to ensure the image of the prisons service is brought up to terms with other security organs in the country.

In a snap interview with the Sierra Express Media, Director of Prisons Mr. Moses Showers expressed delight with the gifts and said donation is not a surprise to him as Prisons Watch has been used to talking up the challenge to boost the effort of the prison service in the country.

Regional Commander Western Area, Assistant Director Sanpha Billo Kamara, said that for the past years the prison services has been suffering from mismanagement but that with the appointment of Mr. Showers as head of the service rapid developments are now taking place.
