Training of radio broadcast technicians – northern region

The Independent Media Commission has concluded the second in the series of the training programme being held for Radio Broadcast Technicians throughout the country.  

The three-day training, which was held in Makeni at the Fatima Campus, University of Makeni attracted 16 radio broadcasting technicians from the Northern Province and Kono District.   

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the out-going chairperson, Mrs. Bernadette Cole highlighted the content of the training which included an overview of requirements for setting up an FM Radio station, the Role of Regulatory Bodies, the Role and Responsibilities of a Radio Station Technician, training on the installation of equipment used in a Broadcasting Studio, Re-Broadcast stations and links.  Alternative source of power was also covered.  

Mrs. Bernadette Cole said that the objectives of the programme were:-  

(a)  To sensitize Studio Technicians about the basic technical requirements in a radio station, and

(b)  To expose Radio Station Technicians to basic training for the maintenance and proper operations of radio transmitters and ancillary equipments. 

The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Commissioner Joshua Nicol and statements were made by the Representatives of the Paramount Chief, the Mayor of Makeni city, the Civil Society Network and the Resident Minister, Northern Province. 

All the speakers paid glowing tribute to the IMC for training Media practitioners, particularly Radio Broadcast Technicians whose functions are sine qua non for the smooth operation of the Radio Stations. 

The facilitators for the programme included Commissioner Francis L. Davies, Cassandra Davies and Mr. Andrew Konneh, consultant for Media Peace Foundation. 

The final training for radio broadcast technicians will be held in Waterloo for technicians in the Western Rural and Urban Areas at the end of this week.  This exercise is part of the Commission’s plan to intensify training for all levels of media personnel ahead of the 2012 elections.
