Sierra Leone Maritime a unique set-up… says MRU member states and US Embassy in Monrovia

Sierra Leone’s maritime operations have been described as a unique organization at the just concluded sub-regional Mano River Union conference held in Monrovia/Liberia recently.  The Director of Border Security who also led Sierra Leone’s delegation, John Vandy Rogers said, the conference was successful  and an eye opener for sister countries.  (Photo: Sierra Leone’s Ambassador Rev. The conference, noted Mr. Rogers, was organized by the American Embassy in Monrovia which attracted 27 participants from the MRU Member States – (Guinea-4, Ivory Coast-4, Sierra Leone-7 and the host country- Liberia-12).  At Cape Hotel, Monrovia where the three-day deliberation was held, Mr.J. V. Rogers confirmed that the American Embassy Officials headed by Ambassador Lynda Thomas-Greenfields provided training and  start-up kits for all participants and that Sierra Leone among the four countries was figured out for what he referred to as a unique maritime operation.

Mr. Rogers also outlined three major issues that were diligently discussed during the three-day deliberations amongst which were cooperation, collaboration and coordination.   However, Mr. Rogers affirmed that, issues like illegal fishing, piracy, terrorism and accident were also deliberated on and that discussions were equally focused on storm disaster and youth issues.

Sierra Leone’s head of delegation furthered that in order for the MRU member states to achieve their aims, they have to engage the media through information and communication sharing with strategic approaches from member States. He affirmed that, each country was mandated to prepare a comprehensive document with regard to the outcome of the conference and reaffirmed statements made by facilitators about the unique set-up of Sierra Leone’s Maritime operations.

Among other delegates  from Sierra Leone were the Director of Police Operations, AL-Sheik Kamara, Tommy DT Taylor-Maritime, Captain Daniel Mansaray – Navy Wing, Lt. Navy Deen, Rtd. Major Mohamed A. Turay – Sierra Leone Port Authority and Sierra Leone Maritime Administrator – Alhaji Worroh Jalloh. Representations of four participants each from Guinea/Conakry and Ivory Coast while Sierra Leone was represented by a seven man delegation, and twelve member delegation from the host country of Liberia.  

A joint maritime committee was set up at the end of the conference and certificates of merit were issued to the proud participants. Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia and Ivory Coast, H.E Rev. Dr. Marie Jilo Barnett as usual hosted Sierra Leone’s delegates before their departure.
