For Golden Jubilee… District Council Chair Drop Work Plan

Bombali District Council Chairman, Eric Dura Sesay (in photo) who has dropped the 2011 Council work plan and reduced weekends for successful celebration of the 50th Independence Anniversary is presenting inspecting all developmental projects to be materialized before April 27 and engaged stakeholders, youths among others in the district for the accomplishment of the Golden Jubilee.

He disclosed that the celebration will involve every person in the district as from village, town, section, chiefdom and district, “every individual in my district, Bombali, will realize the commemoration of Mama Salone’s 50th Birthday.”

Chairman Eric Dura Sesay in commemoration of International Women’s Day on 9th March, 2011 at the District Council Hall, Makeni said that women in Bombali District are going all out to improve their families and their personal situation as they are held back by attitudes, abject poverty, inequality, behaviours and practices of their customs and traditions.

Eric Dura Sesay reiterated that as a respecter for women and ready to fight and push issues until the gender gap is closed, “before I move forward let me assure all women in and out of this District that I would find no rest and I will shed my lest sweat until we men accept the fact that women are very important in the development of a community and a nation, therefore women must be treated with caution, respect and love.”

He further revealed that many reasons why President Koroma is trying to make or striving to eradicate gender inequality at all levels and trying to strengthen the capacity of women to control their own lives and futures, noting, “I am calling on all religious leaders to pray for our mothers and our sisters for them to concentrate on their educational activities and avoid all acts that will hinder their progress. I am calling on all men to reconcile with their women today, I beg.”

The Chairman pointed out that with global poverty affecting women and children, there is a need for all and sundry Sierra Leoneans to join the government to be interested in the fight in removing the obstacles that face women and girls in achieving equality, development and peace, “I know your involvement in micro credits; Osusu’ and other financial institutions is primarily to make sure at the end of each day there is bread and butter on the table for your husbands and our children. Bombali District population is made up of women and children and most of them are facing exploitation and discrimination.”

They commended the government for opening Saturday court sittings to address issues on sexual violence and exploitation which they described as a right step taken. The womens group called for more cooperation of the men and for a stop to discrimination and exploitation towards them.
