Airtel celebrates Women’s Day with the poor

A cross-section of airtel staff, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa including Sierra Leone, visited destitute women and children along the streets of Freetown on International Women’s Day (IWD), 8th March 2011. This visit shared one of the company’s values of being responsive to the needs Sierra Leoneans.

The visit entailed giving food and drinks to the needy as a way of satisfying one of their needs for that day. It cannot be denied that around the world (Sierra Leone included), great strides have been made to recognize the rights and worth of women.

This initiative was championed by airtel’s Head of Human Resources – Jestina Betts and when interviewed by this medium, she said “such celebrations are a time to reflect and reach out to those in need. By effectively increasing the impact of women on public life at all levels, the potential for change towards gender equality and empowerment of women and a more democratic and just society is increased.”

In the airtel office, the day was celebrated by providing a day’s lunch and pieces of chocolate to all female employees. All female employees were admonished to feel Proud, Inspired and Envisioned. For the fact that women have made great strides in equality, they should continue to reignite, inspire and channel women’s equality for the future through their individual jobs.

Jestina Betts noted that airtel stands out than any other competitor in the country and that the red colour on the Airtel logo reflected the warmth and vibrancy of the African continent, the colour of life and the sun at dusk. “These qualities are reflected in airtel’s brand personality of being brave, sensitive and empathetic,” she said.
