Kono Development Union (KONDU) Condemns Violence in Kono District

The Kono Development Union (KONDU) today expressed concern about recent youth political violence in Kono District, and called on all sides to exercise restraint and political tolerance.

“We condemn last week’s violence wholeheartedly and without reservation,” said KONDU Chairman Prof. Sahr Thomas Gbamanja. “Such horrendous acts as we saw on the streets of Koidu have no role in political discourse and absolutely no place in a democratic society.”

KONDU is a non-partisan umbrella organization which works to promote and monitor development in Kono District, and to foster reconciliation amongst its peoples.

“What we saw last week was not an expression of politics, but of criminality,” Prof. Gbamanja said. He urged the responsible authorities to investigate and to bring those responsible to book.

At the same time, KONDU will look to engage the youths of Kono in order to reduce future political tensions and violence.

“It is clear that unless we take action now, violence could easily spiral out of control before the 2012 elections,” Prof. Gbamanja said. “KONDU is committed to working with all parties to chart a way forward which will be peaceful, democratic, and which will contribute to the rebuilding of our homeland.”
