Sierra Stars dented in Abidjan
Sierra Leone junior national side, Sierra Stars in a bid to reach Rwanda 2011 last Sunday faced a 2-0 defeat to the Young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire as they confirmed their place at the Rwanda 2011 Africa U-17 Championship.
The Ivorians go through on a 4-2 on aggregate after 2-2 draw in the first leg encounter held in Freetown a fortnight ago.
The baby Elephants had to wait till the closing stages of the game to break through the iron-clad defence of the Sierra Leoneans. Abou Fofana scored the opener on 82 minutes before Captain John Thome Yoboue sealed victory by converting a spot-kick in added on time.
Elsewhere in Dakar, Senegal edge past the Black Starlets of Ghana 3-2 on penalties to seal their place at the ninth edition of the biennial championship, The Senegalese scored a goal in each half to neutralize the 2-0 lead of the Ghanaians from the first leg forcing the game into penalties which they emerged superior.
Meanwhile, the Eaglets of Mali have qualified for the Rwanda 2011 African U-17 Championship after posting a 3-0 win over their Cameroonian counterparts in the final round second leg clash on Saturday in Bamako.
The Eaglets advanced 4-0 on aggregate after registering a lone goal over the Indomitable Cubs in the first leg held in Yaoundé a fortnight ago.
The final tournament takes place from 8-22 January, 2011 in Rwanda.
