Sierra Leonean athletic legend inducted into USA Sports Hall of Fame

LaGrange College Sports Hall of Fame inducted one of Sierra Leone’s legendary athletes, Denton Guy-Williams, an icon and champion of Sierra Leone Inter-Secondary School Athletics competitions in the early 90’s.

Denton, who attended the Prince of Wales school in Freetown, was a master in the 100 and 200 meters for all schools in 1990 and 91 “Intersec”. This incredible icon was an all-round sportsman who also made history in the Table Tennis Championship as he grabbed the Junior Table Tennis champion title three times and took second place in the Men’s Table Tennis singles finals while he was still a junior.

Although his mother was unhappy with him focusing on sports, the remarkable sportsman made another foundation also as he represented Prince of Wales football team during his time, as well as non-league side FC-21 competitively against Sierra Leone magical footballers such as Junior Tumbu, Junior Parade, Kassim, Tia Matthews, to name but a few.

Mr. Guy-Williams repeatedly represented Sierra Leone in various international athletes’ competitions including the All African Games, Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games in 1992, the World Championships in 1993, and the Olympic Games again in 1996.

In 1992, during the Barcelona Olympics along with Francis Keita, Paul Parkinson, and Sanusi Turay, the exceptional figure participated in the Men’s 4 x 100 meter relay for the Sierra Leonean team, his athletic performance lead to him being granted a track and field scholarship in the USA.

Sierra Leonean superstar Denton Guy-Williams, was inducted into the LaGrange College, Georgia, USA, Sports Hall of Fame on the 30th October 2010 for his contribution to LaGrange’s All-Conference soccer team. An honor which only the best athletes who represent LaGrange College receive.

After his stint in sports, Denton took up a career in corporate America and currently works for BAE Systems Inc. the second largest defense contractor in the US as an Information Technology Manager. He a double Master’s degree in Business Administration, and Information Technology, from John Hopkin’s University.
