National Conference on Children and AIDS Starts Monday
The National Aids Secretariat in collaboration with UNICEF and other stakeholders will on Monday commence a second conference on children and AIDS on the theme “invest on children invest in the future.”
The conference slated for 11th to 13th October, will be held at the bank complex.
At a press briefing held at the National Secretariat, the President of the Children Forum Network, Abdul K Kumta, disclosed how good it is for children to come together to discuss issues concerning HIV and Aids.
He stated however, that 4,600 children below the age of 15 are affected with the HIV and AIDS virus.
That, of the total number of children so affected, 300 are reported to be undergoing a medication process while the rest go unidentified.
He therefore called on parents to do public testing on HIV to enable their subjects follow suit.
He respectfully identified the leadership of the ruling APC to come out bold and do HIV test; an accomplishment he refers to as ‘setting the pace’ to enable others follow.
Madam Konima Borbor Kamara representing Concern World Wide noted however, that her organization’s health care programme promotes the mother to child transmission service campaign and that they play key role in the enhancement of the free health care service.
She reiterated Concern World Wide continued good working relationship with NAS.
Dr Lianne Kuppens, Chief Child Survival and Development Officer UNICEF, said there are challenges to address if Sierra Leone is to achieve the Millium Development Goal come 2015.
The deputy Director of NAS, Abdul Rahman Sesay, in his statement said children have a role to play in the national response to HIV and AIDS.
