German-based NGO brings smiles to under-privileged Sierra Leoneans

United National People’s Organisation (UNPO) has been sending aid to Sierra Leone targeting mainly youths with help to pursue their various careers.
Currently based at 75d Main Motor Road Calaba Town in the east end of Freetown, UNPO institute has succeeded in transforming positively the lives of these youths who are now contributing immensely towards national development.

Headed by its Director and Principal Lansana Conteh, UNPO has well qualified and credible Sierra Leonean teachers who are professionals in various educational fields.
“Some of our former students are working in various ministries and departments in Sierra Leone – we just want to engage them have a great future,” said Bangura who is also based in Germany.
UNPO offers training facilities to students in computing, gara tie-dying, electrical and mechanical engineering, tailoring, catering, computing, hair dressing and other trades like building and carpentry, to mention but a few.

Bangura, who is also Chairman of the German Chapter of Sierra Leone’s ruling All People’s Congress (APC), said the local organization is a credible and registered institution with support from the German government.
Over the years, UNPO has been supporting under-privileged Sierra Leoneans with the provision of food items and medicines as well as other logistical support to various non-governmental organizations.

He commended Sierra Leone’s Consul in Germany, Bessler whom he described as a ‘God-given gift’ for Sierra Lone.
Meanwhile, Bangura disclosed that he will be taking about three to four 40-ft containers to Sierra Leone with medical equipment for free distributions to Government hospitals, Health Centers and private clinics in the country.
“We have been doing this for quite sometime now,” he said.
However, Bangura said their main constraint his organization is facing is the acquisition of land to expand their project in Sierra Leone.

He said they had applied to the Ministry of Land since 2003 to construct their own institute, but unfortunately their request has not been positively granted.
“This is completely frustrating – we are therefore calling on the authorities to help us facilitate this urgently,” he said.
