Awoko blasts civil servants

Information filtering into Sierra Express Media has intimated that the Chairman of the National Assets and Government Property Commission, Alhaji Unisa Sesay (Awoko) (in photo) has expressed his disgust over the attitude of civil servants over the way and manner they handle and misuse government property in the country, a situation he has described as “very much alarming.”

Awoko noted that government property is public money and asset and must be seen protected by all particularly government workers as it is people’s tax money that is put into acquiring these properties.

Talking to Sierra Express Media, Unisa Sesay said his commission is very much disturbed about the lacklustre attitude of government workers towards government property, a situation he said will not augur well for sustainable development in the country.

Alhaji Unisa Alim Sesay told SEM that the act was more common among middle level and senior civil servants in the country who he said for reasons that cannot be understood take pleasure in misusing public assets in the name of being disgruntled or caring less for anything developmental, whatsoever.

He said the Commission was working assiduously on plans to put an end to what he called selfish practices that have contributed in no small way to the country’s gross under development.

Mr. Sesay asks for public support by identifying and reporting people engaged in the misuse of government property to the commission.

He said, “Anybody identified would be pursued by the commission.” The Commissioner said some civil servants took advantage of their political connections to misuse public property. “This negative attitude would impede national development if it was not changed.”

Answering questions as to what constitutes government asset, the Chairman disclosed that any asset that is under the jurisdiction of government or where public money has been used to purchase such asset is regarded as public property.

He spoke of the resolve of the president to ensure that the spirit of maintenance culture is inculcated by all in the country. This he said has to be given every support as is the only way infrastructural and other development can be sustained.
