Awoko commemorates May 11th
Joining thousands to commemorate 30th Anniversary of the death of late Bob Nesta Marley in Central Freetown Wednesday 11, Alhaji Unisa Alim Sesay also known as Awoko cautioned youths to abstain from abuse of marijuana ‘diamba’ and other harmful drugs. (Photo: Bob Marley)
Awoko, who serves as Chairman in the National Council for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency said that youths of society take advantage of May 11th thus the rampant abuse of the drug marijuana ‘diamba.’
Addressing cross sections of youths from Texas, Firestone, Ironstone, Government Wharf and Kroo Bay communities, he emphasized that the late Bob Nesta Marley is an ‘icon’ that could be better remembered in positive and not negative manner.
The deceased, he said, was a reggae legend.
He said he was among persons preaching for freedom and unification of Africa throughout his days on planet earth. Awoko urged the youths to emulate Bob Marley’s meaningful crusades rather than using May 11th as a yardstick for the abuse of drugs.
That even though the possession and use of dangerous drugs is punishable according to law, it has adverse affect to persons taking it.
“Music and sport are tools used by Bob Marley to preach world peace,” Awoko said.
He however encouraged youths of the country to exploit their God given talents for national development.
A Rastafarian, Theo Levi, who doubles as a member of 12 Tribes of Israel, calls on the attention of all that although Diamba consumption is real time sacrament of Rastafarians, its abuse is totally abhorred.
He told the youths to refrain presenting Bob Marley’s Night as an annual celebration, but one that brings the reflection of his unforgettable works.
He commended Awoko for taking the bold steps in sensitizing the youths on the effect of alcohol and drug taking.
The distribution of books on the abuse of drug, a film show and an understanding as to how next year’s Bob Marley Night could be observed climaxed the occasion.
