PMDC Call to Reinstate Bangura
A mammoth representation of supporters of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) from Pujehun and Bo over the weekend met in the southern capital to discuss the three year suspension of the party chairman, Mohamed Bangura, asking that the party reinstate the Chairman on the grounds that they were never informed of the decision and that by all means the action to send the chairman is unconstitutional.
The supporters and constituency executives expressed dissatisfaction over the suspension. They said they were not against punishing Mr. Bangura but “the three year suspension was too long,” they said in the meeting that lasted for several hours. The regional stalwarts argued that the party’s National Council failed to consult them before making a decision to suspend the Chairman.
They called on the National Council to review the decision in the interest of the party. But other party supporters welcomed the decision to suspend Mr. Bangura whom they said have offended the values of the party.
They said the “interest of the party should be above all else.” The PMDC’s National Secretary General, William Tucker informed the aggrieved supporters in Saturday’s meeting that the three year suspension of the party’s national chairman was in the interest of the party. He said a five man committee was set up to investigate both the party’s leader and the chairman on key issues.
He said it was the committee which recommended that the PMDC chairman be suspended for three years with effect from June 1st this year. He said the presence of what he called the then chairman would have undermined the success of the party for the 2012 elections.
At the meeting they also asked the party to investigate some top PMDC MPs and executives who they claim were on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC). The PMDC broke away from the then ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and helped the APC win the 2007 elections.
