A house divided cannot stand

Certainly, a house divided is a fallen house. This statement has been proclaimed and emphasized in both the Holy Quran and the Bible. Sierra Leone as a circular state has featured many church-goers as well as Mosque-goers who heard this sermon on the lips of their religious leaders each Friday and Saturday, but they treat it with levity. And one of the main essences of going to these religious places of worship is to guard and control our behavior in order for peace, stability, survivability, co-existence and continuity to prevail in our society.

A house divided can be likened to some of these political institutions that are in complete disarray in putting their houses together. In connection to the present political in-fighting among staunch members of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) which has sent the ominous signal to not only its supporters but even young Sierra Leoneans who are yearning to become members of the party. At the initial launching of the PMDC, many political pundits saw it as a safe-haven of practicing decent politics, but the recent tussles that have marred the party over ‘who is who’ has denigrated that once acclaimed reputation of the party.

As the political face of the PMDC has been infected by the ‘pull him down’ (PHD) syndrome and the battle for leadership supremacy, the party’s membership is dwindling on a daily basis.

With regard to these political indecencies in our politics, it is feared and has been murmured among credible men of God that even divine intervention would not change the state of this country, if we are not ready to change ourselves as a nation. Religious leaders from both the Islamic and Christian faiths have contended that God can only change a nation if only its inhabitants are ready to change irrespective of tribe, colour, and economic status.

The failure of our political leaders to lead by example has had a contagious effect on the youths of this country. This is why our learning institutions of hope have been transformed and degenerated into a battlefield where students have resulted into obscenity and blood bathing when it comes to important decision making.

If the PMDC cannot wash its dirty linen at home, many thinking Sierra Leoneans have questioned who will they come to rule in 2012? As the Margai versus Bangura tussle is an obvious indicator that will lead the party into extinction if heed is not given to the party’s constitution.
