Reasons Given for Canceling FBC Polls
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) of Fourah Bay College (FBC) stated that the administration took the decision to cancel last Friday’s Students’ Union election because the ballots were not counted on the day of polling.
Professor Thomas Yormah told Sierra Express Media that they had earlier agreed to transform polling stations into counting stations immediately after voting but that did not happen.
The DVC said the problem started when the current Students’ Union Executive announced the cancellation of the election even when voting was still in progress. He said the ground rules for the elections did not give the Chief Electoral Commissioner any power to cancel the polls.
Professor Yormah said they had set up an election oversight body which consisted of the constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone for the next election scheduled for Monday, June 7. He added that an additional polling booth will be open at the Mary Kingsley Auditorium to add to the existing one. This is because of the large number of students that would vote at the centre.
Professor Yormah said there was every reason to believe that there were “external political God Fathers†supporting the various camps. He said it was disturbing that students were being used by politicians and this is why there is an unhealthy rivalry when it comes to election on FBC campus.Â
