12 Caterers suspended at Kissy Mental Hospital
The Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed Daudis Koroma, has suspended twelve catering staff of the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital at Kissy for what he referred to as professional misconduct.
The Deputy Minister took this decision following his recent visit to the hospital after receiving several complains relating to personality conflicts in the administration, the handling of patients, and the inadequate meals for the feeding of patients.
At a meeting yesterday with the Hospital Administration in the conference hall at Youyi Building, Mr. Koroma expressed concern over the poor hygiene conditions and the improper patient care as patients were not having regular bathing.
He also visited the kitchen and collected plastic bags with patient’s food and cooking condiments suspected to be taken home by the cooks on duty. The cooks could not give a satisfactory answer when queried.
The Deputy Minister encouraged the Medical Superintendent and the Nurse Psychiatrist Specialist to work as a team. He also pointed out that the water and electricity problem in the hospital, the inadequate drugs supply, and patient care are considered paramount and would be given the serious attention.
Dr. Edward Nalim said his job is to medically examine all patients and diagnose them appropriately; however, mental health activity is not adequately budgeted for in the ministry.
